Patrick was really good friends with Ivan. Lisa was really good friends with Ivan’s wife, Cara. Lisa cautiously agreed to let Cara introduce her to Patrick. They first started talking in August of 2019, and met in person for the first time that November.
Lisa and Patrick quickly connected and enjoyed getting to know each other and spending time together. It did not take too long for them to conclude this relationship was meant to be.
November 2020 they got engaged. Considering COVID restrictions and the fact that they were not young, they decided to get married right away: January 2021.
The Engagement
Patrick proposed on a small island at a nearby lake (Lake Bunyonyi). It was a very rainy day with slippery walkways, delayed boat rides, and more that contributed to Patrick’s nervousness. The next day was Thanksgiving Day, and we had a gathering with families in our expat community. They surprised us with a cake to congratulate us on our engagement.
The Wedding
Our wedding was January 23, 2021 at White Horse Inn of Kabale, Uganda. Some people in the USA gathered at Village Bible Church (Aurora Campus) to join the wedding online, with some members participating in the ceremony virtually. Many others watched the wedding on Zoom. After the ceremony we chatted with a few people who stuck online for the end.
Both the ceremony and reception took place from the gardens of White Horse Inn. This helped make the day run as swiftly as possible and not leave big gaps of time for those participating from a time zone 8 hours behind.
We had a theme of God’s goodness with our song choices for the various element of the service. We did a twist on the unity candle concept, and made a unity painting, which Simon & Solomon helped us complete. Leadership from Bethel Church, Zana Community Church, & Village Bible Church all participated in the service. Lisa’s mother and friend Linda travelled from the USA to be present for the big event.
The day was filled with joy and no regrets. We spent the drive to our honeymoon location the next day talking about how happy we were with how the day went, loving every aspect of our wedding.
